Tehran: An Iranian Revolutionary Guard commander and his pilot were killed on Monday when an 'autogyro' (helicopter-like aircraft) crashed during an operation near the Pakistan border in Iran. General Hamid Mazandarani died during a military operation in the Sirkan border area, located in Sistan and Baluchistan province, the state TV channel reported. The semi-official Tasnim news agency reported that the accident occurred during a military exercise.
Used to monitor the border
The 'autogiro' is similar to a helicopter in rotor design, but is simpler and smaller. It is commonly used in Iran for pilot training and border surveillance. This aircraft is capable of carrying two people. (AP)
