Colombo: President Anura Kumara Dissanayake's National People's Power (NPP) has won a landslide victory in Sri Lanka's parliamentary elections. Therefore, now the search for the new Prime Minister of Sri Lanka has intensified. The work of appointing the country's new Prime Minister and Cabinet will be completed on Monday. The NPP achieved a record victory in the parliamentary elections on Friday. The NPP on Friday won a two-thirds majority in parliamentary elections and also established its dominance in the Jaffna constituency, the heartland of the country's Tamil minority.

Senior party spokesperson Tilwin Silva told reporters, “We will appoint the Cabinet on Monday, which may include 25 ministers, although the number may be less than 23 or 24.” Article 46 of the Sri Lankan Constitution. As per, the total number of cabinet ministers is limited to 30. The total number of Deputy Ministers will not exceed 40. Silva said that the number of deputy ministers could be higher.

NPP will reduce costs for the public

“We may have to appoint additional deputy ministers to handle larger ministry issues,” he said. The NPP has always been advocating smaller government to reduce costs for the public. The country's government had been functioning with only three ministers including the President since the NPP won the presidential election in September. In the parliamentary elections held in the country, NPP got 61 out of the total votes.
