Colombo: The National People's Power Party (NPP) led by Sri Lankan President Anura Kumar Dissanayake has got an overwhelming majority in the parliamentary elections. Earlier, according to the preliminary results declared till 11 pm local time, NPP had got 70 percent votes. The main opposition party Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) and the National Democratic Front (NDF), backed by former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, got 11 and five percent of the votes respectively. The NPP won a decisive victory in Galle, the capital of the southern province, with more than 70 percent of the vote.

65 percent voting took place

Sri Lanka has a population of 21 million and has more than 17 million voters. Parliamentary elections are held for a five-year term. About 65 percent voting took place in Sri Lanka on Thursday and now the results have also come out. There are 225 seats in the Parliament of Sri Lanka and for majority it is necessary to win 113 seats. Presidential elections were held here two months ago in September.
