DRDO has successfully flight tested its long-range hypersonic missile from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the coast of Odisha on 16 November 2024. This hypersonic missile has been designed to carry various payloads to a range of more than 1500 km for all services of the Indian Armed Forces. The missile was tracked by various range systems deployed in different domains. Flight data received from down range ship stations confirmed successful terminal maneuvers and impact with high accuracy.

Let us tell you that this missile has been indigenously developed by the laboratories of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Missile Complex, Hyderabad along with various other DRDO laboratories and industry partners. The flight test was conducted in the presence of senior scientists from DRDO and armed forces. This unprecedented achievement by DRDO strengthens India's position among the select group of countries possessing advanced hypersonic missile technology. The missile highlights India's growing self-reliance and its commitment to “Make in India”.

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh has appreciated this achievement. He described it as a “historic moment” for the country. Along with this he congratulated the DRDO team, armed forces and industry partners for their extraordinary contribution in this historic success. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh said, “India has achieved a major achievement by successfully flight testing a long-range hypersonic missile from Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Island. “This significant achievement places our country among a select group of countries with such advanced military capabilities.”

Let us tell you that the specialty of hypersonic missiles is their ability to travel at speeds greater than 5 Mach i.e. 6174 km/h, which makes them extremely challenging to detect and stop. The successful test of this missile underlines India's growing capabilities in enhancing state-of-the-art military technology, its strategic deterrence capability and strengthening national security.
