Six Chinese companies including Xiaomi, TikTok, Shein have been accused of stealing user data. An Austrian advocacy group has filed a complaint against these Chinese companies on Thursday, January 16, 2025. In the complaint lodged in the European Union, it has been said that these companies send personal data of users to China illegally. Advocacy group Noyb has already complained against big technology companies like Apple, Google, Meta, due to which many investigations are going on against these companies and fines worth billions of dollars have been imposed.

Noyb complained

Vienna-based advocacy group Noyb (None of Your Business) said that this is the first time that a complaint has been filed against Chinese companies. Noyb has filed a complaint against these Chinese companies regarding data transfer in Greece, Netherlands, Belgium, Italy and Austria and has demanded a fine of 4 percent of their global revenue.

According to Noyb, Chinese e-commerce platform Aliba's website Ali Express, retailer Shein, social media platform TikTok and smartphone maker Xiaomi have admitted that personal data of European users is being sent to China. This is clearly visible from many transparency reports and other documents. At the same time, two more Chinese companies, retailers Temu and Tencent and messaging app WeChat, send the data of their users to an unnamed third country like China.

Xiaomi promised to cooperate in the investigation

In this case, smartphone maker Xiaomi said that the company is investigating these allegations and will fully cooperate with the investigation of government agencies so that this matter can be resolved. At the same time, other Chinese companies have not yet responded in this matter. According to the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) privacy, sending user data outside the European Union is permitted only on the condition that the data protection standards of the sending country are not violated.

China is already infamous

Noyb's data protection lawyer has said that China is already infamous across the world as a country that does not follow data security rules. In such a situation, it can be understood how safe the data of European Union users will be when sent to China. Sending user data to China by these companies is completely illegal and should be stopped immediately.

Chinese companies such as TikTok are already infamous for this. This social media platform has been banned in many countries of the world. The company is soon going to shut down its app in America also. Under the new rules of the US government, TikTok may be banned in America this month. The European Union is currently investigating this complaint by Noyb.
