In recent times, many strict steps have been taken by the government to control spam calls and online fraud. TRAI has also issued strict guidelines to telecom companies in this matter several times. The impact of the steps taken by TRAI is now visible. A report has been issued by the government in which it was informed that in the last three months, there has been a decline in complaints related to unwanted messages.

It was informed by the government on Wednesday that in the month of October, about 20 percent decrease was recorded against spam calls and unwanted MMS as compared to the month of August.

Decline in spam calls and messages

According to the latest report, about 1.51 lakh complaints were registered regarding spam calls and SMS in the month of October. If we talk about the month of September, about 1.63 lakh complaints were registered this month. In comparison to August, about 13 percent fewer cases were registered in September.

TRAI issued directions on August 13, 2024, stating that any entity found making promotional voice calls in violation of the rules will have to face strict consequences. This includes cutting off all telecom resources, blacklisting for up to two years and a ban on new resource allocation during the blacklisting period.

TRAI gave strict instructions

After this strict instruction of TRAI, many strict steps were taken by the telecom companies to stop spam calls and unwanted messages. On August 20, TRAI had given instructions to telecom companies to increase message traceability. For this, all service provider companies had to implement the technical solution by November 1, 2024.

However, the companies had asked TRAI for more time to implement message traceability and new technology. Accepting the demand of telecom companies, TRAI had fixed the last date for this as 30 November 2024. The steps taken by TRAI to provide relief from online fraud and spam calls have started showing results. In such a situation, it can now be expected that in the coming time, there can be complete relief from spam calls.
