From November 1, you may face difficulty in purchasing goods online or getting OTP for other services. TRAI's new rule is going to come into effect on November 1, regarding which telecom operators Airtel, Jio, BSNL, Vi and Cellular Association (COAI) have shown concern. You may face problems especially in delivering transactional and service messages. TRAI is going to implement a new rule regarding message traceability from November 1. After implementation of this rule, telemarketing messages without prescribed template will be blocked at the network level.

There will be problem in getting OTP!

With the new rules of the telecom regulator, fake calls and messages coming to the users will be curbed. In this, users will not receive messages or calls from any telemarketer and institution which are not whitelisted. In such a situation, the users of those banks or payment platforms which have not whitelisted themselves will not receive OTP messages. It is not possible to make online payment without OTP. According to the report, TRAI has asked telecom operators to register all those companies which provide OTP and other important information to the users through SMS. If the company is not registered then users will not receive SMS.

In the last few years, there have been cases of fraud worth crores of rupees through fake messages and calls. In most of the cases, hackers were sending fake links, links to APK files etc. to the users through SMS. As soon as these links were clicked, the personal information and device of the users got access to the hackers and fraud was done on a large scale.

What is the new rule of TRAI?

The telecom regulator has asked telecom operators to follow a certain template for messages containing important information like OTP and link, so that it can be easier to track fake messages. Apart from this, agencies providing banking or other services should be whitelisted, so that their messages can be received by the users. According to the new rule, messages sent by agencies which are not whitelisted will be blocked by the network. In such a situation, users will not receive OTP to make online payment.

However, TRAI has given exemption to banks to whitelist the dynamic part of their commercial messages i.e. URL. Banks have been asked to verify only the static part of the commercial message. According to the report, some entities have still not whitelisted the information, while many have completed the whitelisting process.
