The entry of Elon Musk's satellite internet service Starlink in India is almost finalized. Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has said a big thing regarding satellite spectrum. Apart from Starlink, Airtel, Jio and Amazon Kuiper are in the race for satellite internet service in India. Airtel and Jio were pressurizing the government regarding the allocation of satellite service spectrum. Both these companies want that the distribution of satellite spectrum should be like that of terrestrial mobile networks. However, the government had sought feedback from stakeholders regarding this.
Allocation on first come, first served basis
Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said that the auction of satellite spectrum will be on the lines of 'first come and first serve'. Due to this decision of the government, it will be easy for Starlink to start satellite internet service in India. Jyotiraditya Scindia said that the allocation of spectrum for satellite communication will be done on the lines of 'first come, first served' like 2G service. During the India Economic Conference, the Union Minister said that spectrum auction is not physically possible.
He said there is science involved in spectrum and no country has auctioned radio waves for it. He said, “There is no country in the world that auctions satellite spectrum because it is physically impossible to auction it. If you bring economic logic then how will you allocate it administratively? Pricing comes first.” “It's not going to happen on a first-served basis.” Along with this, the Telecom Minister said, “This decision will be taken by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).
TRAI will decide the price
TRAI will decide the price of spectrum in the coming days. Allocation of spectrum will be on that basis. Spectrum will be given to every person who gets a spectrum service license. The Union Minister said that all over the world, spectrum allocation is done administratively based on the theory of physics. Due to this decision of the government, the path for Starlink and Amazon's Kuiper in India seems to be clear. Jio and Airtel have always advocated spectrum allocation through auction.
