UPI is used most in India. According to NPCI, there has been a record increase in the number of people making UPI payments as well as the number of payments made through it. Most of the users making digital payments are giving preference to UPI. Due to its popularity, many scams related to UPI are also coming to light. This scam is not only being done with common users, but scammers are also defrauding merchants i.e. those who accept UPI payments.

If some things are not taken care of on time, then hackers can commit a big fraud on you. The increase in digital connectivity and use of smartphones has completely changed the preference for making online payments in the last few years. Due to increasing number of online payments, digital fraud has also increased.

Fraud is being done in these ways

If we look at the cases that have come to light in the recent past, scammers are using fake apps with UPI transaction interface. These interfaces look so real that even you can make mistakes. In this, merchants are defrauded by showing fake transactions. Apart from this, scammers are also adopting methods like autopay feature and QR code replacement. However, the vigilance exercised by you can save you from such scams.

Keep these things in mind

  1. To prevent this kind of fraud from happening to you, you will have to verify every transaction in the UPI app. As soon as someone pays you through UPI, open the UPI app and check that transaction.
  2. Apart from this, you will also have to check your bank account regularly. You have to match every transaction with the bank statement. Doing this will help in tracking any fraud that has happened to you.
  3. If you are a UPI merchant then you should not keep your QR code scanner in an open area. Due to it being kept in an open area, scammers can tamper with it and keep the QR scanner of their account. Because of this, every UPI payment made will go to the account of scammers.
  4. Apart from this, another very important thing is that you have to have at least a UPI account. By doing this you will not face any problem in verifying the transaction. Due to having multiple UPI accounts, there may be difficulty in tracking the transaction.
