Electricity is the basic need of every home today. If there is no electricity then it becomes difficult to spend even a few hours. Most of the appliances like fridge, cooler, heater, fan, water pump run on electricity. Therefore, if there is no electricity, sometimes it seems as if life has stopped. Having electricity gives us comfort but its bill also troubles us many times. The more electric appliances we use, the higher the electricity bill. However, sometimes it happens that we use less electricity but the bill becomes very high.

Let us tell you that electricity rates are different in different parts of India. At some places the price of electricity is Rs 7 per unit and at other places its price is Rs 8 or 9 per unit. If you consume more electricity then you will have to pay heavy charges. For correct reading of electricity, the electricity department has installed electric meters at all places. Electric meters cannot be tampered with, hence they are quite reliable and give correct readings.

However, many times it happens that the electricity consumption is less but the bill is very high. This happens due to the meter running fast. If you feel that your meter is showing high electricity bill then you can get it checked. Although you can apply for its investigation by filing a complaint in the electricity department, but before that you can also investigate it yourself.

How to check if electricity meter is running fast

  1. To check the electricity meter, first switch off all the electrical appliances in the house.
  2. After this, note down the initial reading of the meter.
  3. Now, turn on a 1,000-watt lamp or an appliance like a heater for an hour.
  4. Now note down the last reading of the meter after one hour.
  5. If there is a difference of one unit i.e. 1 kilowatt hour in the reading, then the meter is working properly.
  6. If the reading is coming high, then the meter is fast and if the reading is coming low, then the meter is slow.
  7. Take special care of time while taking electricity meter readings. Always take meter readings at the same time, this will ensure accurate comparison.

However, you have to keep in mind that this is not a completely correct method of meter testing. By this process you can estimate whether the meter is working properly or not. Apart from this, you can contact the nearby electricity department to check the electricity meter properly. You can apply for verification to your electricity company. You may have to pay some fees for getting the investigation done by the electricity department.
