DoT has once again taken major action and put a stop to fake calls and messages. Scammers are in tension due to the continuous action of the Department of Telecommunications. Last year, the government and telecom regulator had asked telecom companies to introduce AI i.e. Artificial Intelligence based system to stop fake calls coming from abroad. TRAI had also issued guidelines for this. With the help of telecom operators and the Department of Telecommunications, more than 20 aggregators and fake call agencies have been blacklisted.
Huge reduction in fake calls
The Department of Telecommunications said in its statement that a huge decline has been seen in calls coming from foreign numbers. The number of fake calls coming in crores every day has now come down to around 4 lakhs. India-made Spoof Call Prevention System implemented in collaboration with government and telecom companies to identify fake international calls. Due to this, work has been done to block up to 90 percent of fake international calls coming into the country, the number of which is 1.34 crore in just 24 hours.
Identification of fake international numbers
Scammers used to show users fake calls originating abroad from local numbers. Due to this system, such calls were identified and blocked and users started seeing international numbers. Cyber criminals use internet based tools to trap users. These fake international calls are displayed as local numbers on the users' mobile screen.
The Department of Telecommunications ordered telecom operators to show calls coming from abroad as international numbers to the user. DoT said that the AI based tool of telecom operators Airtel and BSNL has worked to blacklist more than 20 fake aggregators and carriers. Apart from this, fake calls have also been reported through the Sanchar Sathi portal and app of the Department of Telecommunications.
