Former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had organized the first World Hindi Conference in 1975, in which 122 representatives from 30 countries participated. This conference was organized in Nagpur, Maharashtra. In this conference, discussions were held to recognize Hindi as one of the most spoken languages ​​globally and to promote its use in international discussions.

On January 10, 2006, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh celebrated World Hindi Day for the first time. Since then, World Hindi Day is celebrated every year on 10 January. This time the theme of World Hindi Day has been kept as 'Global voice of unity and cultural pride'. The objective of which is to promote the use of Hindi language for linguistic and international exchange.
