Makar Sankranti is considered very important in Hindu religion. This day has special religious significance. Also the Sun enters Uttarayan from Makar Sankranti. The Sun remains in Dakshinayan for 6 months and Uttarayan for 6 months. On this day the Sun enters Capricorn. People celebrate this festival with great pomp. People call Makar Sankranti by different names in different places. Some people call it Khichdi while somewhere it is known as Uttarayan and Pongal. Different types of dishes are prepared on Makar Sankranti. Know what is cooked and eaten on Makar Sankranti?

What dishes are prepared on Makar Sankranti?

A dish in South Asian cuisine made of rice and lentils- Urad dal and rice have importance on the day of Makar Sankranti. On this day, people make khichdi by mixing pulses and rice and eat it with ghee. Khichdi is also donated on Sankranti.

Sesame and Jaggery Laddus- On the day of Sankranti, sesame and jaggery laddus are made in homes. At some places, eating Tilkut also has importance. You can also donate sesame seeds and jaggery on the day of Sankranti.

Rebri, Gajak and Chikki- Rebri and Gajak also have significance on the day of Sankranti. Things made from sesame seeds must be eaten on this day. This results in virtue. You can also eat peanut chikki.

Curd Chuda- There is a trend of eating Dahi Chuda especially in Bihar and Jharkhand on the day of Makar Sankranti. Dahi Chuda is eaten with jaggery. It also provides many benefits to the body and tastes very tasty.

Lye laddus- Lai i.e. puffed rice laddus are also made at many places on Sankranti. It is very easy to prepare these laddus. You can prepare them at home by adding them to jaggery. You can also buy these laddus for donation.

Millet pua- Pua or tikkis made from millet flour are also eaten on Makar Sankranti. Millet keeps the body warm in winter. You can prepare these by adding sesame seeds. If you feel like eating something sweet then millet pua is the best.

Sakrai Pongal- Sweet Pongal recipe is made in Tamil Nadu. This is kheer prepared from rice and jaggery. Which is made by adding gram and dry fruits. This dish has the most importance in Pongal.

undhiyu- In Gujarat, Undhiyu is made on the day of Uttarayan. This is a vegetable dish. In which it is made by adding winter vegetables. It is made with fenugreek pakodas and spices.
