There is an atmosphere of enthusiasm and hope in Thulasendrapuram village of Tiruvarur district of Tamil Nadu and people are hopeful that the current Vice President Kamala Harris will win the US presidential election. Villagers in Harris's native village Thulasendrapuram have prayed at the Sri Dharma Sanstha temple in the hope that she will emerge victorious by defeating former President and Republican candidate Donald Trump. Americans will vote today to choose their next president.

Thulasendrapuram Kamala's maternal grandfather and former Indian diplomat P.V. Gopalan's ancestral village. Kamala's mother Shyamala was the daughter of former Indian diplomat Gopalan. The village came into limelight in August 2020 when Kamala was nominated as the Democratic vice presidential candidate and later that year the village celebrated her victory. Councilor Arulmozhi said, “It is our sincere prayer that the daughter of this earth wins the American elections and becomes the President of the most influential country in the world.”

Arulmozhi and her husband T. Sudhakar have conducted a special abhishekam with sandalwood and turmeric, besides conducting a special archana for the main deity of the Sri Dharma Sanstha temple. The original deity of the temple is the family deity of Kamala's ancestors. The villagers have also put up a big banner on which Kamla's picture is. On this banner, Kamla has been congratulated for victory.

Will feed free food to the poor if they win

Similar prayers were offered in Madurai, where spiritual organization Anushanathin Anugraham offered a special prayer on November 4. If Kamala wins the election, village leaders in Panganadu in the district will give 'annadanam' (free food) to the poor. “Kamala's ancestors are from our village… she is a woman fighting for a big position and we want her to win,” says Arulmozhi. Kamala's maternal grandfather Gopalan was born in this village. He had donated about one lakh rupees to Shri Dharma Sanstha Mandir.

She would take long walks on the beach with her maternal grandfather, where her maternal grandfather would discuss issues of democracy and society with his friends. Harris believes that it was during those days that he began taking interest in public service.
