Amidst the ongoing tension after the civil war in Syria, the Indian Embassy has informed that all Indian citizens are safe here. Government sources gave this information a few hours after Islamic rebels ousted Syrian President Bashar al-Assad from power. Sources said the Indian Embassy in Damascus is still functioning. The Embassy is in touch with all Indian nationals and they are safe, the Embassy is available to assist Indian nationals in Syria.

Indian Embassy issued advisory

According to official figures, there are around 90 Indian nationals in Syria, including 14 who are working in various UN organisations. On Friday, the Indian government issued a travel advisory for Syria, strongly advising Indian citizens to avoid travel to the country until further notice. “In view of the prevailing situation in Syria, Indian citizens are advised to avoid travel to Syria until further notification,” the Ministry of External Affairs said.

“Indians currently in Syria are requested to stay in touch on the emergency helpline number (also on WhatsApp) and email ID of the Indian Embassy in Damascus for updates. Those who can do so will be advised to travel by commercial flights as soon as available. “And others are requested to exercise utmost caution regarding their safety and limit their activities to a minimum.”

President Assad fled the country

The ongoing tense situation in Syria remains a focal point for all other countries, with rebels claiming to have captured Homs, Syria's third-largest city in the north of the country, and Hadi al-, the head of Syria's main opposition group abroad. Bahra Syrian said that in Damascus now “the regime of Bashar al-Assad is over.” This statement comes after Syrian rebels claimed to have captured Damascus. “The tyrant Bashar al-Assad has fled,” the armed opposition said in a statement.
