Recently, India was ranked 105th in the Global Hunger Report-2024 Index. Now the Central Government has given its reply on this in the Lok Sabha. The government said the hunger measurement used in the Global Hunger Report-2024 index is “flawed” and does not reflect the actual situation in India. The government stressed that it is making serious efforts to address the issue of malnutrition.

India was given 105th position

India has been ranked 105th out of 127 countries in the study released by Concern Worldwide, Welt Hunger Hilfe and the Institute for International Law of Peace and Armed Conflict.

Junior Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Minister Nimuben Jayantibhai Bambhania said, “The Global Hunger Index is a flawed measure of the scale of 'hunger' and does not reflect the actual situation in India. Three of the four component indicators (stunting, wasting and child mortality) are related to the health of children and cannot be taken to reflect hunger in the population.”

Improvement compared to 2023

“India's ranking has improved in 2024 compared to 2023, mainly due to improvement in the fourth component indicator of the indicator, i.e. Prevalence of Undernutrition (POU),” he said. In last year's Global Hunger Report, India's ranking was 111 among 125 countries.

Solution to the challenges of malnutrition

“The efforts of Anganwadi services and Supplementary Nutrition Program under POSHAN Abhiyaan have been reoriented and integrated as 'Saksham Anganwadi and Nutrition 2.0',” the minister said. “It aims to address the challenges of malnutrition among children, adolescent girls, pregnant women and lactating mothers through strategic changes in nutritional content and delivery, as well as health, well-being and immunity promoting practices,” he said.
