Two people died after drinking suspected contaminated water in Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu, while 19 others have been admitted to hospital for treatment. The situation is said to have arisen due to sewage getting into the drinking water following recent rains in the Pallavaram area of the city.
Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramaniam visited the hospital and inquired about the well being of the patients. He said that the water samples have been sent to King Institute of Preventive Medicine and Research in Guindy for detailed testing. Subramaniam said that the exact cause of death of the deceased will be revealed after the post-mortem report comes.
56 and 42 year old man died
The deceased have been identified as 56-year-old Thiruvethi and 42-year-old Mohanarangam. Hospital officials said Mohanrangam was brought dead. The Health Minister said that a total of 34 persons were admitted to the hospital, out of which 14 have been discharged and 19 patients are undergoing treatment.
Local residents claimed that the water in the Pallavaram area was contaminated with sewage during the rains, leading to the problem. The government has started investigating the matter seriously.
MBBS student dies in hospital
In another news, MBBS student Albin George (19), who was seriously injured in a horrific accident that took place on the night of December 2 near Kalarcode in Alappuzha district of Kerala, died during treatment in a private hospital. With this the death toll in the accident has increased to 6. (Language)
