The pair of Aishwarya Rai and Shahrukh Khan have been seen together on screen many times, but their chemistry with Aamir was not seen. Well, there was an occasion when both Shahrukh Khan and Aamir were offered Aishwarya's film, but both of them could not do this film. Sanjay Leela Bhansali's romantic film 'Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam', released in 1999, featured Salman Khan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Ajay Devgan in the lead roles. Upon release, the film received praise from both audiences and critics and has since become one of the most powerful romantic films of Bollywood.
The film was offered to these stars first
After working with Salman Khan in his first directorial venture 'Khamoshi: The Musical' in 1996, Bhansali was keen to work with Salman Khan again. The result was that he chose Salman Khan for the role of Sameer in 'Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam'. The filmmakers were so fascinated by Aishwarya's beauty that they chose her to play the lead role of Nandini. However, they faced some difficulties in finding their third lead Vanraj. Bhansali had earlier offered this role to many other actors including Aamir Khan, Shahrukh Khan, Akshay Kumar, Sanjay Dutt and Anil Kapoor, but all of them rejected the film for one reason or the other. Finally Ajay Devgan agreed to do the film.
The songs of the film were superhit
Made for approximately Rs 15 crore, 'Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam' proved to be a blockbuster and earned Rs 50 crore worldwide. A major reason behind its success was the many title tracks like 'Chand Chupa Badal Mein', 'Nimbooda', 'Aankhon Ki Gustakhiyan', 'Tadap Tadap', 'Dholi Taro', 'Man Mohini' and 'Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam'. There were beautiful songs. People still like these songs and they are called chartbuster songs. This film received four National Awards. Ismail Darbar received the National Award for Best Music Direction. Sameer Tanna and Arsh Tanna were given the National Award for Best Choreography, Anil Mehta for Best Cinematography and Nitin Desai for Best Production Design.
