India's public broadcaster Prasar Bharati on Wednesday launched its own OTT platform 'Waves'. Available on Android and iOS, the app aims to offer diverse content under the tagline 'Waves – the new wave of family entertainment'. The platform was launched by Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant at the inaugural ceremony of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI), where he described it as an important moment for the Indian entertainment industry. “I am very happy to see the diversity of films and content in different languages, especially Konkani, on the platform,” the Chief Minister said during the launch, according to a press note shared by Waves.
Will be broadcast in these languages
'Waves' offers content in more than 12 languages including Hindi, English, Marathi, Tamil and Assamese, covering genres such as infotainment, gaming, education and shopping. This includes 65 live TV channels, video-on-demand, free-to-play games and even online shopping in collaboration with ONDC. Sanjay Jaju, Secretary, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting said, 'Waves OTT is an important step in the Digital India vision of the government. It bridges the gap between digital media and entertainment by providing rural audiences access to content through BharatNet.
What does Navneet Kumar Sehgal have to say?
Prasar Bharti Chairman Navneet Kumar Sehgal said 'Waves' has been designed as a 'one-stop hub' for family-friendly entertainment, education and shopping. He said, 'It provides clean content for families, children and youth while showcasing the rich cultural heritage of India.' The platform will have 38 live channels including entertainment networks like B4U, SAB Group and 9X Media. Many news channels are also included in this. All channels of Doordarshan and All India Radio will also be shown on the newly launched OTT platform. In addition to live channels, Waves will also feature a variety of on-demand content, including sections dedicated to movies, games and live events. The official launch of this platform took place at IFFI on Wednesday. Earlier this year, Prasar Bharati had invited TV channels to join the platform.
