The pace of opening demat accounts for investing in the stock market has slowed down. The total number of accounts added in October declined from 43.6 lakh in September 2024 to 34.5 lakh. In this way, the trend of growth in demat accounts for four consecutive months has been broken. It also indicated possible changes in investor sentiment or market conditions.

What is the attitude of investors?

Meanwhile, individual investor activity across different market segments in September 2024 showed mixed trends. There has been a slight increase in the number of individual investors actively trading in the NSE cash market, the report said. In September, 15.8 million individual investors traded at least once, representing a 1.9 percent increase from 15.5 million in August. In the first half of the financial year (6MFY24), a total of 29.4 million individuals participated in the cash market at least once, compared to 30.7 million for the entire FY24.

Derivative Market View

The number of individual investors trading at least once a month in NSE's equity derivatives segment declined 3.6 per cent to 4.46 million in September from 4.66 million in August. For the first half of FY24, a total of 8.7 million individuals participated in the derivatives market, down from 9.6 million for the entire FY24. This decline reflects reduced interest in derivatives trading among individual investors, possibly due to increased volatility or changing market priorities.
