Amidst inflation, the people of Kerala are facing expensive electricity supply. The state government on Friday announced an increase in electricity tariffs by 16 paise per unit for the financial year 2024-25. The new rates have become effective from December 5. According to language news, there is going to be an additional increase of 12 paise per unit in the financial year 2025-26. Let us tell you, this is the fifth time the fee has been increased during the tenure of Pinarayi government since coming to power in 2016.
Minister's claim – there will be no impact on the domestic budget
According to the news, State Power Minister K Krishnankutty said that the tariff increase is minimal and will not affect the household budget of the common people. The minister said that Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) had initially requested a price increase of 37 paise per unit for the year 2024-25 and 27 paise per unit for the year 2025-26. Despite this, the Electricity Regulatory Commission approved an increase of only 16 paise and 12 paise per unit respectively.
Proposed increase for financial year 2026-27 rejected
The minister said that the commission rejected the proposed increase of 9 paise per unit by KSEB for the financial year 2026-27. The tariff hike is applicable to all consumers who use more than 40 units of electricity per month and whose connected load is more than 1,000 watts.
Krishnankutty said if the cost of power purchased from external sources comes down, the benefit will be passed on to consumers. In view of the increasing availability of solar energy, domestic consumers using up to 250 units of electricity per month during daytime will get 10 percent reduction in tariff.
