The much awaited Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme for senior citizens has been started. Under this scheme, senior citizens will be eligible for free treatment up to Rs 5 lakh. This scheme of the Government of India is expected to provide assistance to 6 crore senior citizens of about 4.5 crore families. If there is more than one senior citizen in a family eligible for this scheme, the health insurance of Rs 5 lakh will be shared among them, i.e. the coverage will be on per family basis. Under Ayushman Bharat Yojana or Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, all senior citizens aged 70 years and above, irrespective of their financial status, are eligible for free medical treatment up to Rs 5 lakh. Under this scheme, a separate Ayushman card will be issued to all eligible senior citizens aged 70 years and above. This card is universal and has no income limit, be it poor or middle class or upper class.
Card will not be made without this document
To register under Ayushman Bharat Scheme, it is necessary for a senior citizen of 70 years of age or above to have Aadhaar. Aadhaar-based e-KYC is mandatory for enrollment and issuance of Ayushman Card for eligible senior citizens. Without this, senior citizens will not be able to get this card made. Beneficiaries aged 70 years and above can start treatment from the first day of enrolment. There is no waiting period for any illness or treatment, so coverage starts immediately.
What is the eligibility criteria?
The only eligibility criteria for this special scheme is that the person should be 70 years of age or above. Age is determined according to the date of birth recorded in the Aadhaar card, irrespective of their financial status. Aadhaar is the only document required for enrollment in the Senior Citizens Scheme. A separate Ayushman card will be issued to all eligible senior citizens aged 70 years and above.
