Dot, taking major action, has taken major action against the agent making fake SIM cards. The Hyderabad unit of the Department of Telecommunications and Telangana Police have seized two boxes with 512 SIM card slots and 130 fake SIM cards. The Department of Telecommunications says that the bank fraud could be carried out through these fake SIM cards. Dot has shared this information with its social media handle. The 130 SIM cards seized were from the government telecom operator BSNL.
500 fake SIM cards sold
According to the report, the Hyderabad unit of the Department of Telecommunications said that an agent is involved in the case of these fake SIM cards. The agent sold 500 fake SIM cards from the same Vodafone-Idea Point of Sale (POS). Documents given for taking SIM are currently being investigated. According to the report, these SIM cards were supplied to unarmed telemarcaters. The caught SIM box was being used to send SMS to bulk.
An FIR has been registered against the customers who buy fake SIM cards and the POS agent. The agent selling fake SIM cards of Vodafone-Idea is currently absconding and the police is currently investigating the matter. Source of these fake SIM cards is being investigated. Recently, the government has taken strict action and directed to block millions of fake SIM cards.
Biometric authentication required for new SIM
At the same time, recently like PMO, the Department of Telecommunications has been instructed that a new SIM card will not be issued to mobile users without Aadhaar biometric authentication. This instruction has been issued to curb the increasing cyber crime from the Prime Minister's Office. In such a situation, it has become mandatory for the user to get a biometric authentication to buy a new SIM card. The Department of Telecommunications and Telecom Regulators released several guidelines in August 2024 last year to curb fake calls and messages on the number of users. Also, telecom companies have been instructed to implement DLT system.
