Novak Djokovic withdrew from the Australian Open semi-finals against Alexander Zverev due to injury. The match started with Djokovic leading in the first set, but Zverev came back to win the set 7–6 (7–5). After this Djokovic decided to withdraw from the competition. This takes Zverev into the final of the 2025 Australian Open, which will be played on January 26.
The injury occurred during the quarter finals itself.
Djokovic had earlier complained of a leg injury in the quarterfinals against Carlos Alcaraz, but he managed to win the match, although he took a medical timeout during which he was criticized. Many tennis greats saw this as his strategy. After the game, Djokovic said that if he had not won the second set, he would have been out of the match.
10-time Australian Open champion Djokovic also skipped his practice session on Thursday to avoid injury and reached the semi-finals with his foot taped. Although he looked dominant in the match in the beginning, he conceded defeat in the end. Zverev, on the other hand, qualified for his first final at Melbourne Park and will now play the winner between Jannik Sinner and Ben Shelton in the summit clash.
Djokovic made fun of
Interestingly, Djokovic had to face booing after his exit from the competition. On this, Zverev urged the audience not to make fun of the injured player and praised Djokovic's commitment. Zverev said Djokovic has won titles with abdominal and hamstring injuries. If he can't continue the match, it means he really can't play.
