CCI has imposed a heavy fine on the arbitrariness of WhatsApp. WhatsApp is one of the most used instant messaging apps in India. It has more than 55 crore daily active users. After this fine of CCI, Indian users may soon see a big change in WhatsApp. The Competition Commission of India has forced WhatsApp's parent company Meta to bring new privacy control and data sharing features according to Indian users.

Why was the fine imposed?

Meta has been accused of using users' data for targeted advertising through WhatsApp. The Competition Commission of India has imposed this fine on Meta for using the data of more than 500 million users of India in advertising along with other companies. CCI has imposed a fine of Rs 213.14 crore on Meta and directed the company to add in-app notifications in its app. Through in-app notifications, users will know that their data is being used on Meta's platform. After this, only if the user gives consent, their data can be used for advertisement.

Strict instructions to Meta

WhatsApp has been found to be using users' data for advertising for the next 5 years after the 2021 privacy policy update. CCI has given strict instructions to the parents of WhatsApp, saying that they should warn users by giving clear notifications in their app about what their data is being used for, so that they can give consent.

CCI spokesperson said that this change in the in-app interface will clearly tell users how WhatsApp processes their data. Users in India should have the control whether to share their data with any company or not. Because of this in-app notification, users will have control over sharing their data. The regulator has given strict instructions to Meta to bring changes in the interface of the app in India. However, no statement has been issued by the company regarding this at present.
