Chandigarh: Former Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab Sukhbir Singh Badal has resigned from the post of President of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD). This development comes amid increasing challenges for the party. After the crushing defeat in the Lok Sabha elections and Assembly elections, dissatisfaction started increasing in the party against Sukhbir. A faction of the party had openly opened a front against Badal. However, later the opponents were shown the way out of the party.
Daljit Singh Cheema confirmed his resignation.
Shiromani Akali Dal leader and former minister Daljit Singh Cheema said on Saturday that party president Sukhbir Singh Badal submitted his resignation to the party's working committee today to pave the way for the election of a new president. He thanked all the leaders and workers of the party for reposing faith in his leadership and extending whole-hearted support and cooperation during his entire tenure.
Daljit Singh Cheema said that Shiromani Akali Dal Working Committee President S Balwinder S Bhundar has called an emergency meeting of the party's working committee on November 18 at 12 noon at the party headquarters office in Chandigarh. The committee will consider the resignation given by Sukhbir Singh Badal and decide the further action.
Let us tell you that the elections for the post of President, office bearers and working committee of Shiromani Akali Dal are going to be held on December 14, 2024. The five-year term of the current members is expiring. Daljit Singh Cheema said that Shiromani Akali Dal is a democratic party and according to the constitution of the party, elections are held for the post of President after every 5 years. Earlier elections were held on 14 December 2019. He said that the party working committee meeting will be held on November 18. Resignations will be considered in this and the detailed election program will also be released. Anyone can contest the election of party president. The one who has majority is elected the party president.
